ß-Carotene, the orange red pigment in carrots  was discovered almost 200 years ago. More than 600 different carotinoids have been identified so far. Synthesis around the globe by plants, fungi, and some bacteria exceeds 3 tons per second. Together with the green pigment chlorophyll they are the basis of all life on earth.
